Posey's greatest gift: Being gifted with luck

Posted on: July 16, 2008 7:24 pm

James Posey is looked at as one of the great role players of this decade after winning two championships with two different teams in the last 3 years.  But me?  I call it "dumb luck".  First of all, Miami had no business winning the Title in 2006.  If you didn't think that Stern fixed the 06 Finals (Heat/Mavs), then you either don't watch basketball or you are just a huge Miami Heat homer.  Second of all, everyone knew that Boston was going to be much better in 08 with the additions of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.  Posey simply had great teammates this year.  He isn't the one who put them ver the top.  He was along for the ride.  Third, he really isn't that great of a basketball player.  Sure, he is a "good" defender, but he can be scored on.  On offense, he does nothing great except hitting a couple 3's in a game.  Now lets say you put Posey on a mediocre team such as my Indiana Pacers.   He would be just that: a mediocre player.  Also, he has always been a dirty basketball player, most notably after his ugly foul on the Bulls' Luol Deng in a game during the 06-07 season.

So NBA fans: PLEASE stop kissing this guy's butt after his signing with the Hornets.

Posey's greatest gift: Being gifted with luck

FALSE!  posey is a great defender.  just because he can be scored on doesn't mean that he isn't a great defender.  ben wallace can be scored on.  kevin garnett can be scored on.  marcus camby can be scored on.  ron artest can be scored on.  kobe bryant can be scored on.  heck, even our own danny granger can be scored on.  are these guys only "good" defenders too?

posey is a GREAT ROLE PLAYER.  can he be the focus of a team?  definately not.  but can he contribute and make your team better?  absolutely.  can he contribute enough to warrant the full mid level exception for 4 years?  absolutely.  say what you will about the teams he played on in the finals, but remember, he is still a two time nba champion.  he has the experience of winning it all, on 2 separate occasions.  his experience, and now, veteran leadership, will be a huge asset to a young new orleans hornets team.

you can say he was "lucky" to be on miami and boston when they won their titles, but you can also say that of any role player who is on a team that wins it all.  that doesn't mean he hasn't contributed A LOT for that specific team that season.  posey had a great season, and IMO WAS the one player who put boston over the top.  try to imagine the celtic bench without him.  you would have only had pj brown and eddie house for most of the season.  don't try and tell me they wouldn't have been as good.
